Hello All, I had meant to have this posted last week, but I was rather busy at school and it seemed more important to get my work done than to write on my blog and tell you I was getting my work done. I have been working very hard all week and am starting to hope that I might actually finish God willing.______________ Culinary Wimsey was a success. We had people who made cake, dessert bars (aka slice), curry and soup all of which they personally had never made before. I made French macaroons which are meringue sandwich cookies. So delicious and mine came out OK. My filling didn’t really work, but i will be making them again so it was a successful first try of a recipe. It went a little late in the day as we had some people arrive late so it was after 7pm before we sat down to eat all the yummies. Several traditions emerged for the new holiday. First thing of the day someone makes up a bowl of punch to be drunk throughout the day, savoury and sweet dishes must be at least equal (too much sugar this year!) and the unofficial Aussie name of the day is Whimsical Tucker. Tucker being an Aussie word for food. __________Halloween came and went without much fuss. It is not an Australian holiday and until 20 years ago was not mentioned at all. Now with American TV the younger generations are trying it out a bit. A few kids go Trick or Treating and such, but there is very little else that happens. No big displays at the Malls and no TV specials. Most of my friends don’t encourage their kids in it because they don’t see any merit in the holiday and since it is not an Aussie tradition they don’t see the need to start. I rather liked the lack of notice as Halloween has never been my favourite holiday and I always hated all the creepy decorations in the shopping centres and all the scary stuff on TV. Several people made a point to wish me happy Halloween since” I was American”, I told them I really didn’t care about it and would much rather promote Thanksgiving as the better American holiday to be mimicked. More about that next post!
