Waltzing Matilda
Just an average week in the life of an adventurer. Went to school, went to church saw a movie, and killed a snake with my bare hands (kidding), usually stuff :) Actually, something did happen that reminded me why I have always liked colder climates. Around here bugs are just a part of life; I have gotten used to walking down the street shooing the flies away from my face and seeing tiny ants on the sidewalk at my feet. Not really a big deal, but the cockroaches are another matter. (Insert ominous music here). They are so big! And they come into your house! We have bait set out and usually it is not a problem, until Friday night when I went to watch one of my housemate's DVD's. I opened the case, and a cockroach the size of my thumb was sitting on the disc, eww! How did it get inside the case is what I would like to know? I was so creeped out I set down the case and it scurried away before I could kill it._____________ my friend Sarah gave me a book of Australian poetry which includes The Man From Snowy River which was turned into a movie and TV series and Waltzing Matilda, which was turned into a folk song and which has become the iconic aussie song. They sing it at footy games and every kid knows it. Interestingly it is not about a dancing girl. Matilda was an old way of saying backpack or gunny sack and the song is about a wanderer who jostles his pack as he walks along the fields. The last line of the chorus is "come a waltzing matilda with me" meaning join me as a vagabond. The book is full of words and phrases that I did not know, for instance a billabong is a watering hole and tucker is food. ________________Not much else to report, weather is still nice and my skin is browner then it has ever been. I have yet to get a sunburn, thanks to my ancestors and their olive skin. This weekend my friend Jono (aka Jonathan) is having a birthday party and it is going to be a murder mystery dinner. My character is a country western star. They gave that to me because I am the only one who can do a southern accent. Next blog will have pictures and a play by play of the event. Bye!
