singing, snorkelling, and Quokkas

Merry Christmas! I will write again after Christmas day, but I realize I haven’t written in a while. I have been enjoying my time off. Lots of sleeping late and reading fun books. I went the an event Sunday night that sadly I have no pictures of because I misplaced my camera and just found it today (under a book, who would a guessed?). Carols by Candle light is a show that goes for several weeks in many locations. We went to one in a park downtown. There must have been 1000 people there, all on picnic blanket facing the stage were a live orchestra played Christmas music and we got to sing along. They did a kids program first and had some unknown dignitary stand up and make a speech first. We ignored all that and eat our picnic dinner and talked. When we came in (it cost $10 per person and went to charity) we got a song book and a candle each. When the light was fading we lit our candles and read the lyrics by their light. It was so fun! But I must say, the candle dripped all over me, unlike at home were the candle is lit just for silent night, this one had to last through 10 songs or so. It finished with fireworks, really good display. ____________On Tuesday my friend Melanie moon pie came back to Perth with her parents for a few days before they took a plane home. I went with them to spend the day at Rottenest Island (aka Rotto). I holiday getaway just a ferry ride away. I don’t have pics of that either, but Mel should be posting some on facebook for me soon. What a great day. We got onto the island and took a bus to bay and we snorkelled. I love water! I love swimming! I love snorkelling! We didn’t see anything crazy awesome like the coral reef or anything, but it was still beautiful and so relaxing. We went to two bays and then took the bus back to the ferry. Perfect day. Rotto is nothing more than multiple bays and holiday cabins you can rent. You can rent bikkies and ride the whole thing in a day. There is also a small kangaroo type of marsupial called a Quokka that is so cute! They don’t exist anywhere else on earth, just on that island, cool huh? It was so good to hang out with Melanie all day before she left; she is such a good friend, someone I will defiantly keep up with even if we live far apart. __________last night we did High Chocolate, we are in the middle of a heat wave that is very humid, so hot cocoa may not have been the best choose, but people had fun. I did a reading of How the Grinch Stole Christmas which few people had read before (although Dr Seuss is quite popular). No had grown up watching to cartoon either. I will let you know how Christmas is and I will have pictures too. Merry Christmas!

Me!
I know, I know. It has been far too long between posts. So long, in fact, that I am giving you at 2 for 1 deal. See below for pictures of Hobbit Day. For the uninitiated, Hobbit Day is a made up holiday in which all three Lord of the Rings movies (extended edition!) are watched and the 7 Hobbit meals are eaten. Now to do this in one day is quite the feat (I have don’t it 4 times myself), eleven hours of film not counting breaks. We decided to do the less fanatical (some would say wimpier) version by watching the first movie Friday night and the other two Saturday. Now because I celebrated Thanksgiving in October with my Canadian friends, I wanted to do something fun for thanksgiving weekend and that is how this all came about. We had seven people at the height. We had the event at Tim and Leoni’s house, Leoni was in and out with their son Isaac and Richard left after Two Towers (around 3pm Saturday) saying he had things to do. I told him he was breaking up the fellowship and cursed him in Entish, Elvish, and the tongues of men (not really I just thought of that). It was a fun weekend, we eat good food and I cried through most of the second half. I also got to show everyone the hidden video Easter eggs because no one had seen them before. I was introduced to Honey Joys, an Aussie favourite that usually get eaten at children’s birthday parties, along with Chocolate Crackles and Fairy Bread. Honey Joys are corn flakes tossed in butter and sugar and baked until golden, very yummy. Chocolate crackles are rice crispies (aka rice bubbles) tossed in butter, cocoa, and coconuts and Fairy bread is white bread with butter and Hundreds and thousands on it (colored sprinkles). I have yet to try fairy bread, everyone talks about it with such happy reminiscent looks on their faces, my friends are planning to make me some for my birthday._____________________________the next weekend after hobbit day (last weekend) my friend Sarah had a birthday party and there was a theme. Bad Taste. The idea was to come dressed in horrible clothes, more specifically to dress like a “Bogan”. Bogan is an Aussie word that means Redneck, in the worst possible way. I tried to look Bogan, but I was told I came off looking groovy and funky and that it kind of worked for me. I must buy more scarves. The winner of the evening was my friend Richard, the breaker of the fellowship. As you can see in the Hobbit pictures, he has long hair, he decided to cut it for the summer so for the party he gave himself a mullet! I am pleased to report that he finished cutting his hair the next day.______________________I have one more week of Uni before I take off three weeks for Christmas. I am so excited to have a break. I have plans for High Chocolate, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day (if you don’t know what boxing day is you will have to wait for the post-Christmas blog). I am please I have lots of plans, I think it will be a fun time.

Hobbit Day

to explain the first two pics, we had a good bye picnic for Melanie (moon pie). although she is on vacation with her parents in New Zealand and will be coming back for a few days before Christmas.
